Our highest self!

“Self-censorship is not just self-betrayal and self-abandonment (which would be bad enough), but soul-betrayal and betrayal of our Muse, out inner voice, our highest self.” Ralph

The law brings death to our highest self, where the grace of God, walking in the spirit brings life.

When we stop going to delight in the good news that God is for us and loves us and when we stop believing that we are worthy of love because Jesus came and took our place on the cross, we look to others to deem us good.  As we look to others to deem us good, we squash our inner voice.  We know part of our self does not measure up to even our own standards, so we quiet all of it.

Somehow, Ralph  Waldo Emerson knew that this was at work.  He at least observed this principle at work in himself, where he would self-censor.  The interesting thing to me, is that the gospel is the rock upon which a person can begin to listen to this inner voice, this highest self, and when a person has first believed, they will find that highest self to be the creator Himself.
